NIHSA issues flood warning to Kebbi
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a flood warning to Kebbi State due to the rising water levels of the River Niger. In a statement, the agency’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, says that flooding may occur in the state as a result of upstream activities in Niger and Mali. NIHSA notes that the warning becomes imperative following reports from the Niger Basin Authority (NBA) in Niamey, Niger Republic. The Agency attributes the rising water levels in Niamey to upstream activities in both Niger and Mali, with floodwaters expected to flow into Nigeria through Kebbi State gradually.

NECA Warns Nigeria’s Debt Crisis Will Deter Investors, Urges Government to Curb Borrowing

The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has warned that the speed at which Nigeria is racing toward debt overhang would deter serious investors from bringing capital into the country. NECA President Ifeanyi Okoye has identified the floating of the Naira as the last straw that broke the camel’s back and precipitated the exit of many multinational manufacturing concerns from Nigeria. He stated that the country is fast reaching debt-overhang and no serious investor will bring capital in a debt-ridden economy. He also noted that the 2024 supplementary budget would lead to increased borrowing by the federal government from overseas lenders and local facilities, but whichever way, “it will be detrimental to both foreign and domestic investments.”

US petitioned over NNPCL’s alleged violation of Russian oil sanctions
The group, identified as Concerned Citizens on Economic Reform Nigeria (CCERN), petitioned in a formal letter addressed to the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), to investigate and impose sanctions on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and its CEO, Mele Kyari, for allegedly violating international sanctions on Russian crude oil. The group accused the NNPCL of importing Russian crude oil and petroleum products at prices exceeding the $60 per barrel cap imposed by the Price Cap Coalition. According to CCERN findings, these activities have resulted in transactions worth over $2.08 billion, allowing Russia to generate significant revenue to sustain its military efforts in Ukraine. CCERN further suggested that the proceeds are being used to finance Russian influence in West Africa and sponsor anti-Western protests.
