A pro-Palestinian demonstration leaves one dead

Clashes between police and a pro-Iranian Nigerian Shiite group protesting against Israel’s incursion into Gaza left one person dead and several injured on Thursday in Kaduna, northern Nigeria, Hundreds of members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) took to the streets of the city on Thursday, carrying Palestinian flags and mannequins representing dead children, in a show of solidarity with the Palestinian people and denouncing Israel in the war that has pitted it against Hamas since 7 October.

Voting ends in Madagascar presidential election boycotted by opposition

Voting has ended in Madagascar’s presidential election after a turbulent campaign marred by boycotts and allegations of election irregularities. President Andry Rajoelina, a former DJ who first came to power with the backing of the army in 2009, is seeking a second consecutive term in office.

Observers applaud peaceful conduct

Observers from the European Union (EU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Thursday congratulated Liberia on the “largely” peaceful conduct of the second round of the presidential election. The two candidates are neck and neck, with opposition candidate Joseph Boakai leading with 50.58% of the vote against 49.42% for incumbent president and former football star George Weah. 5,107 polling stations out of a total of 5,890 (86.61% of polling stations) have been counted so far, according to Davidetta Browne Lansanah, chairwoman of the electoral commission (NEC).

South Africa’s ruling ANC to back opposition motion to close Israeli embassy

South Africa’s ruling party has said it will support a parliamentary motion calling for the Israeli embassy in South Africa to be closed. In a statement on Thursday, the African National Congress (ANC) also welcomed a call from President Cyril Ramaphosa for the International Criminal Court to investigate Israel for war crimes.

Sudan: UN warns of conflict spreading to other parts of the country

A deputy to the UN secretary-general for Africa told the Security Council on Thursday that the conflict in Sudan was spreading to other parts of the country, which already has the highest number of displaced people in the world. The Ghanaian diplomat, Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, alarmed the Council at a non-voting meeting that “Sudan is facing a convergence of worsening humanitarian calamities and a catastrophic human rights crisis”.
