Warehouse looting: Police, NEMA on red alert in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command and the National Emergency Management Agency have placed their operatives on red alert against any attack on warehouses and shopping malls. The command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin said that the command had tightened security around the different shopping malls and government warehouses with food items in the state to prevent possible attacks by hoodlums.

Several incidents of attacks and looting of warehouses and food trucks have been reported in many cities against the backdrop of the hardship and the cost of living crisis in the country Last week, some youths stole food items from trucks stuck in traffic along Kaduna Road in the Suleja area of Niger State. The attackers reportedly overwhelmed the truck drivers and looted scores of bags of rice before they were dispersed by soldiers.  The Agricultural and Rural Development Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration confirmed the looting of its warehouse in Dei-Dei by residents in the FCT, over the economic hardship in the country.

Outrage as bandits kidnap 280 pupils from Kaduna schools

Over 280 pupils and teachers of Government Secondary School and LEA primary school at Kuriga, Kaduna State were abducted by bandits on Thursday, triggering national outrage. The Jama’atu Nasril Islam, Amnesty International, the Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, and the House of Representatives condemned the attack and asked the government to rescue the victims immediately The bandits reportedly invaded the Kuriga area of the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Thursday, shooting at their victims before taking away at least 280 of the pupils and teachers from both schools.

Army chief dismisses coup calls, demands good leadership

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen.  Taoreed Lagbaja, said personnel of his service had accepted the democratic system of government in place in the country and had no plan to truncate it. Lagbaja described personnel of the Nigerian Army under his leadership as agents of democracy. His statement comes in the wake of a series of coup allegations against the military. The allegations were fuelled by the forceful takeover of power by the military in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger Republic.

Nigeria must battle food insecurity as priority — IMF

The International Monetary Fund, IMF has asked the Federal Government to pay immediate attention to food insecurity in the country. The IMF’s position came on a day governors said Nigeria must go into production if it must get the people out of the current hardship. At the 16th Edition of the Leadership Annual Conference and Awards, the IMF made its position known in its End-of-Mission statement issued after the completion of the IMF Staff 2024 Article IV Mission to Nigeria.

24 states can’t pay salaries without FG allocation – Budgets

At least 24 states of the federation will not be able to pay workers salaries this year without having to wait for federal allocations from the central government, findings by The Punch have revealed. Only 11 out of the 36 state governments of the federation can independently pay their workers’ salaries without depending on federal allocations, according to an analysis of the state governments’ approved budgets for the 2024 fiscal year.

The representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Oliver Stolpe says one of the findings of the 2023 wildlife chapter of UNODC’s Organised Crime Threat Assessment for Nigeria revealed that Nigeria is a key transit hub and consolidation point for various forms of illegal trade in wildlife and forest products.
